Issues > Government Funding of Religion > Charitable Choice

"Charitable choice" is a legislative initiative that allows the government to fund the social service ministries of churches, synogogues, mosques and other pervasively religious organizations. "Charitable choice" is not another term for President Bush's "faith-based initiative." Expansion of "charitable choice" is, however, a major part of President Bush's plan. We oppose charitable choice because it poses risks that are unnecessary, harmful to religion, and unconstitutional. Government money is followed by government regulation, making it harder for the church to remain autonomous and to perform its mission.
